WASH

Our programmes

WASH

Safe water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) are basic rights for everyone, including people with albinism. Inclusive WASH means making sure that water points, toilets and hygiene services are safe, accessible and dignified for all, and that the specific needs of people with albinism and persons with disabilities are not overlooked.

Inclusive WASH is part of AWA’s wider rights-based, disability-inclusive approach. It runs through all our programmes rather than standing alone.

Why inclusive WASH matters for people with albinism

Health

Clean water and good hygiene help keep sensitive, sun-damaged skin clean and reduce the risk of infection.

Sun exposure

Long walks and waiting at open water points in the midday sun are a real health risk.

Low vision

Poorly lit or badly designed facilities can be hard and unsafe to use.

Protection

Isolated water points and latrines can expose women and girls, including those with albinism, to harassment and violence.

What we do

WASH planning

We raise the needs of people with albinism in humanitarian and development WASH planning. Our Founder and Executive Director is a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of the UN WASH Cluster for Cameroon’s North-West Region.

Hygiene and sun-safety messages

We include hygiene and sun-safety messages in our health and community sessions.

Safe facilities

We consider the safety of water points and sanitation facilities in our protection work.

Our work in action

New WASH activities will appear here.

Activity updates for this programme will appear here soon.

Make WASH services inclusive
